I came across this idea on Pinterest a while ago when researching pot plants. I was growing so many new succulents and other indoor plants and I needed cute pots to house them. I didn't have all the equipment such as a kiln and turning wheel to make true ceramic pots so I opted for a quick and easy version that would require very little skill to master.
Air dry clay is a clay that is easy to mould and dries in 24 hours. It can be painted and varnished and is ideal for those plants (such as succulents) which require very little watering. It cannot work for plants which require alot of water as the clay will dissolve when wet. For my existing pots, I chose to paint them in monochrome bands to match.
To start, you need a rolling pin, water, an existing pot for sizing and your clay. You need to start rolling the clay flat first before shaping with your hands the pot base (a circle) and then a rectangle which then wraps around the circle. The water is used to close the gaps together.
