Firenze
Florence, known to locals as Firenze was our first step into the Tuscan region. A city full of art, culture and architecture with statues and marble busts everywhere, we unfortunately visited on a day when the museum housing the famous statue of David was closed. We saw the beautiful cathedral, Santa Maria de Fiore, Palazzo Vecchio, Ponte Vecchio and spent a while wandering the old town centre.
San Gimignano
The medieval Manhattan of the middle ages, San Gimignano was our favourite Tuscan town. It was so picturesque, with medieval towers rising high into the sky and a wall encasing the entire town. We spent a whole day wandering the town which afforded stunning views of the green countryside, eating our gazillionth gelato and enjoying a delicious cheesy cannelloni in a spacious courtyard.
Siena
We enjoyed Siena more than Firenze, as its younger sister. It was less busy and more quaint. We enjoyed more gothic and romanesque architecture.
Val D'Orcia
The drive from Siena to Val D'Orcia was very scenic despite our overcast weather. We were visiting in summer so the land wasn't as green as we imagined as the soils had all been recently tilled.
