Bosnia and Herzegovina - Mostar

Mostar was a huge highlight for us in Eastern Europe. The town is beautifully restored after the Bosnian war from 1992 – 1995. We went on the most fascinating free walking tour and learnt about the Ottoman, Austro-hungarian and Yugoslav influences on the city. Then our guide Sveko spent a lot of time explaining the Bosnian war between the muslim Bosniaks, orthodox Serbians and catholic Croatians. We learnt that to this day, there is still a heavy divide between these 3 ethnic groups and tensions still flare especially during election times. Also, there is still a road that separates the Bosniak and Croatian communities from each other.
