People often refer to Sighisoara as the older sibling of the town Sibiu with its beautiful colourful buildings, cobbled stone streets, cafes and medieval looking taverns. We really enjoyed this town and had the place nearly all to ourselves as there were very few people about. We found some towers and the old city fort walls to explore as well as lots of pretty arches and laneways. There is even a high school right in the middle of old town and you have to climb this stairwell tunnel to reach it. We rode into town on bikes as our airbnb was only 3km down the road. Cycling on the main road was a bit scary at times as there were no bike/pedestrian lanes and sometimes the large trucks and buses seemed to be quite close to you. However, we didn't have a problem with other drivers at all and found them to be quite slow and careful when they saw us. For lunch we enjoyed a traditional Romanian meal of beef soup and pork stew.
We couldn't find a good place that was close to Sighisoara for parking our van on our usual camping website Park4night so we had a look on airbnb. We stumbled across Alex who converted his old caravan into a special airbnb stay. He then built a small house/shack to live in and is now entirely living off the grid. He grows his own vegetables, has a green house and a large well that collects ground water and uses solar panels for his electricity. When we arrived, he was digging a trench to put his water pipe so that the water doesn't freeze. He was very friendly and invited us into his home for chats and cooked us dinner one night too.
