We planned a one week trip to Iceland earlier in the year with Joe's brother and his wife and it escaped our minds whilst we were in the van travelling around the Balkans. However, when December came along, it came right back into our radar and we couldn't have been more excited. For our trip, we had to leave our van behind in France as it would have been too difficult to ship it across! We all flew into Reykjavik and enjoyed 2 nights exploring the capital. We went on a free walking tour and learnt some interesting facts - Icelandic police only recently acquired guns as they viewed having such weapons would only encourage more gun violence. Also, that Icelandic people truly believe in elves (magical beings who can cause mischief and seriously harm humans)!
Highlights of Reykjavik included:
Hallgrimskirkja church
Korlaportio - the flea market
The port and old harbour
Concert Hall
Walking along the main streets and visiting cute shops and stalls
Local hot spring thermal spa - we went to a local one for just $7 as the Blue Lagoon was a bit out of our budget! The local place had 4 different pools each with a different temperature ranging from 37 degrees to 42, a spa/steam room and a plunge pool.
