Hallstatt is a beautiful village nestled in the mountainous Salzkammergut region and sitting right beside a huge lake. The village is UNESCO wold heritage listed and back in the day, it was a salt mining town. All the architecture consists of 16th century Alpine houses colourfully painted and decorated. The small winding alleyways now house cafes, restaurants and souvenir shops. We were unable to do the hike up towards the Erchern valley as the pathway was covered in snow and closed.
The start of our toboggan slope!
We really needed snow chains to drive up to the parking spot. The entire ground was frozen!
A beautiful opening in the mountains very close to where we parked up for the night.
Beautiful views from above! We wanted to walk further up this trail but it was closed due to all the snow.
Amazingly calm and serene lake nestled at the bottom of the mountains.
Look at the amount of snow! It would have probably come up to our thighs if we trudged through it off the path.
Enjoying golden hour sunset.
Riding our bikes back home to the van!
Loved this sunroom overlooking the lake.
Interesting to note the gutters which catch the melting snow so that the entire pile doesn't fall off at once and hit someone/thing below.
Lots of cute boutique souvenir shops, cafes and restaurants about.
Exploring all the laneways.
Joe's favourite - the rock store!
Creepy decorated alpine house.
