Driving into Slovakia, we started to have more van issues including the breakdown of our alternator. We managed to make it to the city of Poprad in the countries north east and found a mechanic who were happy to take a look at our van. We stayed the night in their front parking spot as they were going to order a new alternator for us. The next morning, they had somehow fixed the alternator and we were on the road towards the High tatras for a spot of skiing! The High Tatras were beautiful – the moment we reached the mountains (which was only a 20min drive from Poprad), very light snow was falling at this higher altitude. We parked at this Slovakian restaurant that also offers a camper stop, had lunch there and took our bikes to suss out the ski slopes. The next day we enjoyed skiing the amazing blue slopes which were so picturesque. The ski lifts were also a bit different to what we were used to in Germany as they were shaped like a pod and open to the outside. We both really improved our skiing and were smashing the slopes but then, I went a bit too fast down a steeper slope and twisted my knee. I needed the rescue snow mobile to get me down the slope and that was the ski season over for me sadly!
Our favourite ski grounds so far!
The amazing ski lift views!
We did not try walking on the frozen water!
Rustic Slovakian restaurant in the High Tatras where the camper stop was. It was decorated in olden style ski equipment made out of wood.
The frozen lake which we camped in front of for a night.
Bratislava is a picturesque little town but one day was enough to see most of the city’s attractions. We parked along the Danube river and there were a lot of other vans at this spot too. On the free walking tour of the city, we visited Hviezdoslavovo Square, Hotel Carlton, the National Theatre, The Main Square, the Old Town hall, St. Michael’s Gate, Grassalkovich Palace and the Blue church. We also learnt that Slovakia and Czech Republic peacefully separated as a country in what is known as the Velvet Divorce. Both countries are still on very friendly terms with each other today.
